bone broth recipe

I only really got searching for a bone broth recipe during my pregnancy, and I use this same bone broth recipe approximately once a fortnight to make my meals for Grace. Prior to this I had bought several bone broth products like this chicken bone broth powder, but was surprised to see how pricey they are. Stock cubes are the usual norm to add flavour to recipes, but the ingredients in stock cubes are empty, as it’s mostly salt. However, if you switch your stock cubes to beef or chicken bone broth, you will reap a heap of nutritional benefits too. Check out the 10 benefits of bone broth.

Using a slow cooker is best, but you could also add the ingredients to a large pot and simmer it for up 8 to 12 hours.

What ingredients are needed for this simple bone broth recipe?

  • Organic chicken carcasses, lamb bones, or beef marrow bones
  • Two tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar
  • Approximately 1 to 1.5 litres of water
  • A generous pinch of good quality salt
  • Various vegetables, e.g. carrots, potatoes, celery, parsnips are optional

Where to buy ingredients for this bone broth recipe?

  • Riverford sell low priced organic chicken carcasses and beef marrow bones. All you need to do to get free delivery is spend £15 or more on meat products. Their beef braising steaks are delicious and the meat falls off the bone if you put them in the slow cooker for 6 to 8 hours.
  • Eversfield Organics is another option to buy meat bones for a bone broth recipe, but they are slightly more expensive than Riverford Organics. Free delivery is also over £80.
  • Some apple cider vinegars can be extremely vinegary without any hint of apple, but this raw apple cider vinegar from Clearspring is flavoursome. Add half a shot of this vinegar to a shot of pure lemon or lime juice to a glass, then add cold distilled or filtered water for a refreshing electrolyte drink during or after a workout.
  • Salt is important for the body. There is such an attack on salt by the NHS and the media, just like there is an attack of saturated fats like butter and meat fats, but daily salt is necessary for a healthy body. Salt is added to many processed foods and it’s probably the table salt, as it’s so cheap. When you cook meals from scratch, like this bone broth recipe, adding salt is important to the flavour. Invest in a quality salt rich in minerals like this one we use from Navi Organics.

Instructions for homemade bone broth

  • Add your meat bones to the slow cooker or large pot. Add the vegetables too, if you are using them.
  • Add a generous pinch of salt.
  • Cover with enough water to the top.
  • Add two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your bone broth recipe.
  • Leave to cook on slow for 24 hours in the slow cooker or 8 to 12 hours if you are simmering on the stove in a large pot.
  • Leave the hot broth to cool for about two hours until warm. If you decide to freeze and pour broth that is still too hot into silicone pouches to put in the freezer, the bags may leak.
  • Use a sieve to separate the bones from the broth.
  • Chicken bone broth can be stored in glass bottles in the fridge for up to a week, or you could freeze in silicone freezer bags.
  • Beef bone broth is not best to store in a bottle, as the fat rises to the top and it is difficult to get out of the bottle when you need to use it. Instead, freeze it in silicone freezer bags for easier access.
